Computational Social Science is an emerging research field at the intersection of the Social Sciences and Computer Science that aims to investigate social phenomena with computational methods, especially with techniques from large scale data analysis and machine learning. This talk outlines the range of research in this field by presenting some recent advances on analysis methods and application studies. In particular, it will summarize novel methods for understanding sequential data through pattern mining (Exceptional Model Mining) and hypothesis comparison (HypTrails). Additionally, it will cover empirical research on human behavior on the Web and on urban mobility.
