"Affordable plant phenotyping: the challenges and opportunities"

Advances in automation and imaging equipment have created a renaissance in the measurement of phenotyping traits in plants. While previously the bottleneck was the image acquisition currently it is extracting those measurements in a reliable and automated fashion (to deal with high-throughput and high data dimensionality) that is now the challenge. In this talk, I will discuss these challenges in tandem with prior-art. I will emphasize on our work towards developing robust and extremely affordable plant phenotyping solutions, which combine smart sensing and compression with distributed (remote) processing. Affordable solutions are expected to increase the adoption of image-based phenotyping in daily practice but introduce new vision challenges, which I discuss. Time permitting, I will also present early findings on machine-learning based phenotypic discovery and sketch theoretical aspects of optimal rate-distortion image compression for this application.
