Bio-inspired fabrication of motifs with various design structures using 3D fabrication

Advanced Micro Mechatronics lab at Jeju National University is a leading multidisciplinary collaborative research group in the field of cutting-edge manufacturing technologies of 3D electronics ranging from multi-header printing system, electro hydrodynamic atomization to custom made electrospinning system and Atomic Layer Deposition. The lab has conducted an oriented research efforts in developing soft devices which mainly include in situ UV tailored tri-legged robot, multi-material soft bio-inspired whisker sensor, soft cylindrical actuator and flexible humidity, temperature and flex sensors, nanofibers membrane and 3D printed elastomer channel for organ on a chip. Benefiting from the geographical location of lab being in Jeju Island, there are myriad available opportunities like Alginate, carrageenan, fucoidan, ulvan and agarose fibers being abundantly crafted ion the island, which are widely used in marine derived polysaccharides for biological and biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility. Looking at their importance, AMM lab will critically analyze such materials and further utilize its state of art multi-head 3D fabrication system to fabricate the biological motifs with precision up to 100nm while their various structural motifs will be emulated in a synthetic system. In this presentation, unique fabrication systems, processes, and developed devices will be discussed.


Dr. Kyung Hyun Choi is a professor of Mechatronics Engineering at Jeju National University (JNU), in South Korea. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Pusan National University, South Korea, in 1985 and 1990, respectively, and his Ph.D. from The University of Ottawa, Canada in 1995. Prior to joining JNU, he was a senior researcher at Korea Atomics Energy Research Institute. He has published more than 100 journal articles and a book chapter. He has five international patents related to printed electronics. His research field is Printed Electronics including super fine inkjet technology, continuous liquid interface production (CLIP), digital projection lithography (DPL) and two-photon polymerization (2PP), e-printing based stretchable electronics, and printed devices such as OLED, OPV, and Memristor. He is currently supervising 10 Ph.D. students and has graduated 20+ Ph.D. students.
