Theory Seminar & Webinar: Stability of heterogeneous parallel-bond adhesion clusters under load

The stability of heterogeneous adhesion bonds cluster of receptor-ligand pairs under constant loading is investigated using a simple theoretical model. The stability of entire cluster can be tuned by changing densities of different bond populations as well as their extensional rigidity and binding properties. 

Surprisingly, an optimal stability is achieved when the total load is shared such that loads on distinct bond populations are equal to their individual critical rupture forces. It is also found that cluster heterogeneity can drastically affect cluster lifetime.
