Quantum autoencoders for error correction

The PGI Science Office has begun a new series of seminars: the "Jülich Quantum Computing Seminar" will take place every fortnight on Tuesdays at 15:00 via video conference and is intended to promote cooperation between the working groups conducting research in the field of quantum computing and quantum information at various institutes at Forschungszentrum Jülich. In addition, the format offers students and postdocs an opportunity to present their work to a wider specialist audience.

Abstract

The research on quantum neural networks has grown rapidly within the last years as they promise to be useful for various applications in the field of quantum computation. In this talk, I will discuss how certain types of quantum neural networks, called quantum autoencoders, can be exploited for the purpose of quantum error correction.

Firstly, I will briefly introduce quantum error correction, and classical and quantum neural networks.

In the second part of the talk, I will present how the application of quantum autoencoders to error correction can represent an alternative to the canonical scheme of syndrome measurement and decoding. Remarkably, quantum autoencoders are able to deal with both computational errors and qubit loss, and the training process allows to find optimal denoising strategies for different types of errors.

Finally, I will show that novel correcting codes can be discovered using the presented tools.
