Understanding structural, electronic, and optical properties of organic electronic materials from first principles

Understanding the electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors, with an emphasis on transport and optical gaps, is essential to the design of modern organic electronic and photovoltaic devices.

Naturally, this cannot be achieved without understanding the underlying structure of these materials as well. Here, I show how this is achieved using a combination of density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory approaches. I then show how this sheds light on issues of direct relevance to device performance, such as inter-molecular hybridization, band dispersion, polarization phenomena, exciton formation and delocalization, and more.
