Particle Assembly at the Nanoscale

For many applications advanced materials design requires assembling nanoscale building blocks into well-defined arrays and superlattices to tailor macroscopic properties and functions.

Here we present examples for inorganic and polymeric nanoparticles, how size, shape and interactions can be controlled and employed for a controlled assembly in ordered periodic and aperiodic structures.

We show how shape determines the assembly of smallest magnetic nanoparticles into ordered superlattices, how quantum dots can be arranged into hexagonal and stripe domains, and how soft nanoparticles can be assembled into crystalline and quasicrystalline structures in two and three dimensions.

This opens a general route for a controlled assembly of nano- and micro-particles to control mechanical and optical properties of materials.
