New magnetic order in the nanocosmos: from native oxides and self-assembled nanomagnets to spin-structured multilayers

The mastery of structural control on nanoscopic length scales is of paramount importance for the creation of magnetic nanostructures with tailored functionalities. New types of magnetic order in thin films can be stabilized by dedicated control of their growth processes:

Non-collinear spin structures in metallic multilayers are stabilized via intercalated metal oxide nanolayers, uniform arrays of magnetic nanostructures with long-range order can be grown via multi-step hierarchical self-assembly, and deposition of magnetic materials under oblique incidence allows for a new class of layered materials with precisely adjustable spintronic properties.

This talk illuminates the microscopic mechanisms of these growth processes and emphasizes the role of advanced, synchrotron radiation based x-ray scattering methods for in-situ characterization and control of their emerging properties.
