Exploring atomic orbitals in condensed matter: orbital Hall and orbital Rashba effects

Spin-orbit coupling gives many exotic phenomena, such as spin Hall effect, Rashba effect, chiral magnets, topological insulators, etc. However, most of the research works so far concentrated only on spin physics, not noticing the importance of orbital degree of freedom. As building blocks of condensed matter, in real space, atomic orbitals are of importance in order to design materials with desired properties. In this talk, I discuss how atomic orbitals and their hybridizations give rise to orders. I demonstrate that atomic orbital hybridization leads to orbital-dependent Berry gauge field in k-space, which leads to orbital Hall effect. At surfaces, atomic orbital hybridization leads to orbital Rashba effect. These effects, which are orbital analogues instead of spin, can be dominant over the spin ones. Spin-orbit coupling then recovers spin phenomena. I discuss their further implications, such as electron scattering and adatom interactions, etc.
