Plasma Wall Interaction

Benjamin Berberich, IEK-4

The movie shows a hydrogen plasma hitting parts of a plasma-restricting wall. Such a wall can mimic a limiter or a divertor as they are used in modern fusion-reactors. These kinds of simulation scenarios allow studying the physical properties of the buildup of a stable potential in front of the wall. During the run the negatively charged wall is shielded by a positive space charge called the 'sheath'. In steady state the simulation can be used to estimate heat- and particle fluxes and their distributions hitting the plasma facing material and thus giving information about erosion and other lifetime restricting quantities.
