Detailed Investigation of Liquid Sheet Breakup
Using Direct Numerical Simulation and In-situ Visualization

Future combustion engines must convince with their performance and low emissions. In order to further improve the exhaust gas values, a detailed understanding of the injection process is necessary. Injection systems are just one example of a variety of industrial flows in which gases and liquids interact.

Diesel Injection Jet

Today's injection systems have nozzle sizes of approx. 100 μm and accelerate the fuel to approx. 600 m / s. The injection process is thus highly complex and proceeds extremely rapidly. A detailed understanding of the process is of great interest, since the injection has a massive influence on the later combustion. The high-fidelity simulation of the injection spray allows a detailed view of the complex physical processes.

Diesel Injection Numerical Simulation

Within the scope of a JARA-HPC project the physical mechanisms were analyzed, which lead to the breaking apart of liquid bands (ligament) into several droplets and thus decisively influence the evaporation process. In order to gain a better understanding of the process, the simulation results are converted into a visualization in order to allow a precise temporal and spatial view of individual structures.
