Forschungszentrum Jülich values the diversity of its employees and actively promotes it. We are committed to providing all employees with equal and fair opportunities to achieve their goals and career aspirations through measures and initiatives - regardless of their gender, sex or other characteristics.

Joint Guidelines on Equal Opportunities


Forschungszentrum Jülich, the University of Cologne, RWTH Aachen University, TH Köln, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are united by a close partnership in research, education, and science management. Together, we are committed to actively supporting diversity, a variety of perspectives, and equal opportunities.

Our joint guidelines on equal opportunities create the framework conditions to ensure that the institutions involved are open to everyone, irrespective of their personal circumstances or social background. The aim is to promote an organizational culture in which individual, social, and cultural diversity is viewed as an asset and a sign of quality.

Further important cornerstones of the joint guidelines include increasing diversity at management level, helping to reconcile work and family life, eradicating discrimination, and supporting equal career opportunities.

Active promotion of women

At Forschungszentrum Jülich, the active support of women in STEM subjects and management positions in particular is important for a number of reasons.

As one of the biggest employers in the region, Forschungszentrum Jülich is well aware of its societal responsibility and supports women in science on their path to management positions through targeted and effective measures. We are aware that the current status of vertical and horizontal segregation on the labour market in Germany is reinforcing social inequality between men and women. This inequality is something we aim to tackle through various measures aimed at female students and girls at school. Forschungszentrum Jülich is not only committed to giving women an insight into our research, but also to providing creative spaces in which they can test their skills at an early stage, free from existing gender stereotypes.

As it is Jülich’s aim to understand, research, and solve the grand challenges facing our society, the contributions of women are particularly important to us. The broadening of our perspectives, which goes hand in hand with (gender) diverse research teams, is paramount to our progress and innovation. Furthermore, societal solutions can only be considered to be all-encompassing if they reflect and follow the principle of social diversity. Through our focus on the fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy, we bear a major responsibility for the role of women in the research landscape and their contribution in helping to shape change. We recognize and value the great potential women have to offer and aim to provide the necessary conditions to support women in their scientific careers.

Forschungszentrum Jülich therefore offers numerous services that support individual career development and continues to develop and evaluate these services. In addition to the elected equal opportunities officer, who represents the interests of all women, Forschungszentrum Jülich has the Equal Opportunities Bureau (BfC), which reports directly to the Board of Directors and is an established point of contact for all activities concerning equal opportunities and diversity. BfC advises employees at all levels on how to reconcile work with providing care and their private lives as well as on support for women and the promotion of diversity and inclusion. It also develops and implements relevant measures, instruments, and services together with a wide range of other parties at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Gender Equality Plan

Forschungszentrum Jülich values the diversity of its employees. The Gender Equality Plan bundles goals, measures and initiatives in five fields of action to give employees equal and fair opportunities to realize their goals and career aspirations - regardless of their gender or sex.

Partnership with the “Klischeefrei” Initiative

For young people, learning and pursuing a vocation is an essential part of planning their life. However, an examination of participation in the German labour market broken down by gender reveals a clear imbalance between women and men with regard to their chosen occupational fields.


Especially in STEM disciplines, the participation of women is very low. This begins with the low numbers of female students taking STEM classes in schools and extends to the choice of apprenticeships, courses of study, and even career. In the long term, this may lead to greater social inequality and horizontal labour market segregation, because participating in, for example, technological and computer science developments allows people to exercise decision-making power and to shape present and future society.

It is therefore particularly important to give young people the opportunity to test their strengths and abilities and expand their interests – regardless of existing gender stereotypes or gender-specific attributions. As a partner in the “Klischeefrei” initiative, Forschungszentrum Jülich is committed to providing just that.

In the various offers, campaigns, initiatives, and measures to promote women and girls in STEM subjects, Forschungszentrum Jülich takes care to enable career guidance to be free of stereotypes.

GenderNetz Research Project

Forschungszentrum Jülich is a partner in a research project entitled “GenderNetz” about gender bias in the career paths of women in engineering and information technology through informal funding relationships and networks. The project is funded within the framework of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s funding area concerning strategies for enforcing equal opportunities for women in education and research (FKZ 01FP1712).

The project addresses the following research questions:

What is the relationship between informal networks and research careers in engineering and information technology? What is the composition of networks? How can networking potentials be implemented so that they help with career advancement? Can gender differences be observed in these aspects?

To answer these questions, interviews with engineers and computer scientists holding doctorates at Forschungszentrum Jülich and other institutions were conducted and analysed. In addition, managers and gender and diversity officers in the participating institutions and companies were consulted for their input.

International Women’s Day

For over 100 years, International Women’s Day has been celebrated around the world on 8 March. On the one hand, it reminds us of the successes achieved in equality between men and women, and at the same time, it points out the discrimination that still exists.

Every year, Forschungszentrum Jülich organises a joint campaign for International Women's Day in the region together with the Equal Opportunities Office of the City of Jülich and the Counselling Centre for Women and Girls. Unfortunately, this had to be cancelled in 2021 due to Corona.
