PhD Position - Optimization of organic solar cells by design of experiment and machine learning methods


Organic solar cells are a promising solar cell technology that enables printable, flexible and lightweight solar cells. To further improve the efficiencies of organic solar cells, researchers must choose from a variety of organic semiconductors and find process conditions that optimize cell efficiency and stability. To accelerate this process, in this project we want to complement solar cell fabrication and characterization with statistical experimental design methods. In addition, we want to make the evaluation of experimental measurement data more precise and faster than is currently possible using methods from the field of machine learning.

Your Job:

  • Fabrication and characterization of organic solar cells.
  • Process optimization using statistical design of experiments and machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Regression or Bayesian Neural Networks
  • Analysis of measurement data using the Bayesian Inference method

Your Profile:

  • Masters degree in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering and related disciplines
  • Knowledge of semiconductor and solar cell physics is required
  • Knowledge of solar cell characterization methods and/or drift-diffusion simulations is useful but not mandatory
  • Very good grades in the masters and bachelors degrees is mandatory

The position is initially for a fixed term of 3 years. Pay in line with 50% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) and additionally 60 % of a monthly salary as special payment („Christmas bonus“). Pay higher than the basic pay may be possible.
