Concepts for the management of radioactive waste from fusion

ABOUT

Nuclear fusion is considered one of the most promising energy sources of the future and can make a significant contribution to a secure and sustainable energy supply in the long term. Intensive research into this technology has been underway worldwide for several decades. Concrete implementation is now drawing nearer: Germany is currently planning the construction of its first fusion power plant. The transition from research to practical application raises numerous new questions and challenges, particularly regarding the safe commissioning and reliable operation of such facilities, as well as their fuel cycle, including waste disposal.

The IFN Institute is currently developing a targeted research program aimed at transferring existing expertise in nuclear engineering (IFN-2) to fusion facilities (IFN-1, HGF Fusion Program) within the framework of the HGF NUSAFE Program. The focus includes, among other things, the operational safety of fusion facilities as well as strategies for minimizing radioactive waste from fusion operations, for example through recycling and clearance concepts (Eurofusion). Issues related to safeguards measures are also being investigated, taking into account the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This is complemented by fundamental materials research, particularly regarding radiation damage and its effects on the service life and reliability of components (first wall). Through this work, the IFN makes an important contribution to the preparation of future fusion power plants and to the development of a safe and sustainable energy supply.
