Waste Treatment

About

Our current R&D approach starts with a comprehensive characterization of the problematic waste stream for development of an individual treatment and management concept for waste minimization, material reuse or safe disposal. Our research focuses on minimization of the volume of the radiotoxic waste, to safely condition residual waste and to optimize complex and time consuming procedures

Research Topics

Irradiated beryllium (Be) from research reactors is a type of radioactive waste for which there is currently no established disposal method, so this material is currently in interim storage. A current research topic at IFN-2 is investigating the corrosion behavior of irradiated Be under interim storage and final disposal conditions.

A new field of work at IFN-2 is the management and recycling of radioactively activated structural materials from future fusion power plants.
