Pieperhoff is the lead author of a recent study that highlights differences in brain structure associated with psychopathy—a condition that is one of the strongest predictors of persistent violent behavior.

The scientist’s answer is nuanced: while there is evidence of structural differences in the brains of people with psychopathic traits, factors such as predisposition, environment, and life experiences can also play an important role in the development of psychopathy.
