PGI-Day 2026 – A Day of Science, Innovation and Community

The PGI-Day 2026 brought together researchers, students and staff from across the Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI) to exchange ideas, present current activities and strengthen collaborations across the institute.

The programme featured scientific pitches showcasing start-up and technology transfer projects from PGI, highlighting how excellent research is translated into innovative applications. The pitches featured Sebastian Siegel (CimonaAI), Jonas Bühler (IceCirc GmbH), Tim Bode (Quicopt) and Qing-Tai Zhao (NeurIQ), who presented their latest developments and highlighted the entrepreneurial potential of research conducted at PGI. An invited talk by Markus Storcz (Bayer AG) provided valuable insights into career opportunities in industry and discussed pathways for successfully transferring scientific research into industrial applications.

The highlight of the event was the keynote lecture by Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. John Martinis, "From Prehistoric Qubits to Useful Quantum Computers." Reflecting on several decades of research, Martinis outlined the development of quantum computing from its earliest experimental stages to today's progress towards useful quantum computers. Throughout the day, he engaged extensively with students and early-career researchers, discussing scientific questions, career development and future perspectives. The event also offered an opportunity to reconnect with long-time collaborators and colleagues from different stages of his career.

Beyond the scientific programme, PGI-Day provided valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and networking across the institute. The event concluded with the traditional PGI summer party, where discussions continued in an informal setting.
