Capes-Humboldt Research Fellowship

The Capes-Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdocs and experienced scientists offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes) enables scientists with above-average qualifications from Brazil to carry out research stays in Germany.

The programme is open to applicants from all fields.

Duration of research stay

Postdocs: 6–24 months
Experienced scientists: 6–18 months (can be divided into up to three stays lasting a minimum of three months each)


  • Fellowship amount worth €2,600 per month for postdocs (costs shared between AvH and Capes)
  • Fellowship amount worth €3,100 per month for experienced scientists (costs shared between AvH and Capes)
  • Subsidy towards the cost of medical insurance (Capes)
  • Initial lump sum (Capes)
  • Outbound and return flight to Brazil (Capes)
  • Mobility lump sum of € 100 per month (AvH)
  • For divided research stays, travel allowance for the second/third stay (AvH)
  • Additional benefits: Language fellowship, family allowances for accompanying family members, flat-rate allowance for accompanying children of single parents, Europe allowance for necessary, fixed-duration research stays at a research institute in another European country, extensive alumni sponsorship
  • Subsidy towards research costs to be paid to the hosts in Germany: € 800 per month

Application requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Brazil or abroad with an official revalidation in Brazil (postdocs: completed less than four years ago; experienced scientists: completed less than twelve years ago)
  • Brazilian nationality or permanent residence visa in Brazil
  • German nationals are eligible to apply if their habitual place of work and residence has been located in Brazil for at least five years

Selection result: By 27 November 2023
Start of the fellowship or language course: March – November 2024
