Making Research Results Transparent and Usable

Jülich, 30 September 2020 – At the end of June, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) approved funding for “NFDI4Ing”, a consortium for the establishment and expansion of a national infrastructure for research data (NFDI) in engineering. Eight universities and three research institutions are members of the consortium. NFDI4Ing is one of nine initiatives that won out in this contest, which has invited tenders for the very first time. Teams from the Central Library and the Institute of Energy and Climate Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich will be involved. To find out more, we interviewed Torsten Bronger from the Central Library, one of the authors of the funding application.

“We’re Outlining Pathways for Meeting the Federal Government’s Climate-Gas Reduction Targets”

Jülich, 20 July 2020 – Germany is aiming to achieve broad greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. In order to reach this goal, we have to complete transform our energy system in all areas, whether that be the energy sector, construction, industry, or transport. It is truly the project of the century. Researchers at Jülich have used a whole family of computer models to simulate how this can be achieved while keeping costs to a minimum. They published the summary of their study last autumn, but the full study is now available. Over 160 pages, 45 tables, and 83 graphics, it breaks down in detail how our new energy system should look in order to optimize costs. We sat down with the authors of the study, Dr. Martin Robinius and Prof. Dr. Detlef Stolten, to discuss it.

Statement on the Federal Government’s Hydrogen Strategy

Jülich, 20 July 2020 – In order to reach its climate change mitigation targets by 2050, Germany needs to completely transform its energy system in all sectors, whether that be the energy sector, construction, industry, or transport. Hydrogen plays a key part in this – including in the study by Jülich’s subinstitute for Techno-Economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3) on the transformation of our energy system, a summary of which the researchers presented in October 2019. The complete study is now available, which has prompted the authors to make a statement on the Federal Government’s National Hydrogen Strategy.

“Green” hydrogen made in Africa

Jülich, 9 June 2020 – The project “H2Atlas-Africa” focuses on the idea of making Africa a successful producer and exporter of sustainably generated hydrogen for a climate-neutral energy supply of the future. The key goal is to determine sites in the west and south of the continent that are particularly suitable for producing hydrogen using renewable energy. Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Rachel will officially launch the project tomorrow (Wednesday, 10 June), which has received around € 5.8 million in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project coordinator is Dr. Solomon Nwabueze Agbo of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Hydrogen is an Essential Component of the Energy Transition

The energy transition is one of the great challenges to society of our time. Germany and the European Union aim to be climate-neutral by 2050. This should be achieved while ensuring that the population has a reliable energy supply and that industry remains competitive. Hydrogen technologies play a key role in this and must therefore be developed and made commercially available on a large scale.
