The scientific core competencies of the department are oriented towards the requirements of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrochemical transducers and applied in the fields of modeling and simulation, physicochemical analysis, electrochemistry, physics and manufacturing technology. The department is thus able to design, manufacture, test and characterize functional membrane systems for membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). To better understand the complex functional relationships, the operating behavior of the MEAs is modeled and simulated. In addition, the relevant MEA structures are analyzed in detail and characterized in order to resolve their effect on the performance of the electrochemical cell.
