Transport

Like any other economic sector, transportation will have to contribute to Germany’s stringent reduction targets regarding greenhouse gases and locally active pollutants. New fuels as well as the related conversion and end use technologies are currently under discussion in regards to their potential contributions towards achieving these targets:

  • hydrogen from renewable power sources for fuel cell passenger cars, busses and trucks
  • liquid fuels from extraction, fermentation or gasification-based processes for long distance trucks, ships and airplanes
  • liquid fuels from hydrogen and carbon dioxide for long-distance trucks, ships and airplanes

Based on IEK-3‘s intersectoral approach for shaping the future energy system, hydrogen will play a dominant role in transportation as a neat fuel or as a feedstock for liquid fuel production. In cooperation with the Fuel Processing and Systems department, related assessment topics of the Mobility group are targeting status and prospects of:

  • feedstock availability related to renewable power and biomass
  • fuel provision pathways and technologies
  • vehicle and propulsion technologies

Selected assessment tools are fuel consumption analysis with Matlab/Simulink®, in-house detailed infrastructure design on a component level based on software development with Matlab® and Python.
