The stratosphere in global change

IEK-7

IEK-7 conducts research on the chemistry, dynamics and microphysics of the stratosphere and the tropopause region, and on the role these atmospheric layers play in the climate system.

For this purpose, aircraft and balloons are used for experiments intended to clarify processes, primarily on a local and regional scale. With the analysis and use of satellite data, these studies are expanded to include global and climatological scales. The evaluation of the measured data is closely interlinked with model calculations.

In-flight research
Faster, higher, further - the research aircraft HALO has been opening up new perspectives in atmospheric research for the past 10 years. In more than 2000 flying hours and numerous missions, it was able to prove its special strengths. HALO can rise over 15 kilometers and has a range of 8000 kilometers. Researchers were already flying over the Arctic Ocean or across the Antarctic with the aircraft.

Results

The results of our research are regularly published in the scientific literature. We also make key contributions to international assessments carried out by institutions such as WMO, IPCC and SPARC, which form the basis of decisions taken by policy makers in the field of atmospheric research and climate research.
