Ordering phenomena in functional transition metal oxide heterostructures

Transition metal oxides exhibit electronic correlations and complex ordering phenomena which make them ideal candidates for new concepts of magnetic storage devices. They consist of heterostructures of different transition metal oxides where interfaces can add functionalities not found in the individual constituents. The subtle balance between electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom leads to a variety of quantum phenomena and results in an extreme sensitivity of external stimuli.

An example of a multifunctional heterostructure grown with an oxide molecular beam epitaxy system is the heterostructure La1/3Sr2/3FeO3 (LSFO)/La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) heterostructure grown on SrTiO3. The ferromagnetic properties of LSMO close to the interface can be tuned via electronic doping caused by the resistivity change of LSFO. Results taken from Waschk (Ph.D. thesis 2017) are shown in the figure.

The upper left figure shows a STEM measurement. The interface between both layers is indicated by a white dashed line. On the upper right XRR and XRD measurement show a smooth surface and a good out-of-plane crystal quality. The lower part of the figure is the magnetization depth profile determined from polarized neutron reflectometry.
