Scanning Quantum Dot Microscopy (SQDM)

Our deep experience in LT-SPM based single-moleucle manipulation has recently resulted in the discovery of the new scanning probe approach imaging nanoscale variations of the electrostatic potential of nanostructures [1, 2]. Fabricating a single-molecule quantum dot directly at the apex of the NC-AFM tip we have been able to induce and detect its single-electon charging. The charging of the fabricated nanoscale quantum dot turned out to be extremely sensitive to the environmental effects of electrostatic potentials produced by the nanostructures surrounding it. Thus scanning the dot over the surface it was possible to quantitatively characterise the electrostatic landscape of the surface.
