Doctoral Committee

The Doctoral Committee of the Scientific and Technical Council was founded in the 1970s. Forschungszentrum Jülich set up this committee to enable structured, quality assured guidance for PhD students during the course of their PhD before many other institutes had done so. The Committee covers all early-career scientists who have a PhD student agreement with Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Its mission is to create reliable conditions for PhD theses at Forschungszentrum Jülich and transparency through defined standards. This includes ensuring a transparent admissions procedure in line with fixed criteria, a PhD agreement signed by PhD students and supervisors, and regular work reports on the project’s progress. The content of PhD theses is not affected. Responsibility for upholding these standards lies with the heads of institutes and the PhD supervisors. The Doctoral Committee also functions as an ombudsman and can advise PhD students and their supervisors if problems arise. The committee consists of elected representatives from among the scientists, the head of Personnel, and guests, including elected representatives from among the PhD students.
