Water treatment, Fostering of treatment efficiency by oxidation to prevent taste and odor events

Water is essential for human life. Sufficient supply with clean drinking water as well as good quality of water resources are required for a sustainable development of societies. Since the last decades China undergoes very fast industrial and economic growth. Its areas of high population density have an increasing need of water. At the same time the quality of raw water is impaired due to the input of nutrients as well as of inorganic and organic pollutants. In order to assure the supply with good quality water the whole water cycle has to be taken into account: a powerful sewer system, a competent management of water resources with an adapted monitoring, a capable water treatment plus an efficient distribution of the drinking water.
The SIGN research and development project intends to specifically develop and adopt German water technologies and management concepts to the Chinese boundary conditions. The strong linkage between science and practice in both countries makes the project highly interesting for the Chinese as well as the German partners. The cooperation of German partners from industry (mainly small and medium sized enterprises, SME) and research allows scientific progress with ensuring at the same time the practical applicability of the newly developed technological solutions. Implementation in China is warranted, since the leading research institutes, the relevant administrative entities as well as the water suppliers will be involved.
The SIGN project will be conducted in the Taihu region, which is one of the most economically prospering regions of China. Furthermore, the Taihu region belongs to the focus regions of the currently running Chinese National Major Science and Technology Program for Water Pollution Control and Treatment demonstrating its high political importance.
The Tai lake represents a drastic example of water pollution with nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate), organic contaminants and heavy metals. Due to the insufficient raw water quality problems with the drinking water supply occurred repeatedly in recent years. The SIGN project will contribute to an improved water quality at the Taihu and in the megacities Wuxi and Suzhou. Thus it represents a pilot project for other regions of China facing similar problems.

ZEA-3 will perform an analytics based contribution to reduce taste and odor compounds. The source of Taste & Odor (T&O) compounds will be identified by in-depth analysis of raw water and water by LC-MS/MS from different process steps in the waterworks. For the T&O compounds either found in the raw water or formed in the treatment chain the reaction pathways will be evaluated and reproduced in the laboratory using oxidation of precursors/T&O compounds by electrochemical oxidation coupled to mass spectrometry (EC-MS). The potential to eliminate relevant T&O compounds in the finished water (precursor and/or T&O compound degradation) by technological process optimization of the present oxidation treatment by means of advanced oxidation processes (AOP) will be evaluated. Depending on the evaluation, one of the technological means will be suggested to be set up for the reduction/elimination of the relevant precursors/process intermediates in Wuxi and Suzhou waterworks, respectively.
