New Bacterial Strain Uses Methanol as Food Source

Jülich, 6 March 2015 – Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich have developed a new bacterial strain which uses methanol, a simple and inexpensive alcohol, as a food source. Their research results could mean that in future, the biotechnological production of important chemical substances will need fewer raw materials containing sugar, therefore avoiding competition with food and animal feed. The biotechnologists present their new development in the current issue of the renowned journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
