The relaxational dynamics of soft matter, e.g. polymeric materials and glass-forming liquids, is characterized by a large frequency range. Dielectric (or impedance) spectroscopy, the measurement of dielectric properties, encompasses this range. It is based on the interaction of an external electrical field with the electric dipole moment of the sample. The fluctuations of local electrical fields are measured, which are connected to the dynamics on a molecular scale.
Although the frequency range of neutron scattering is rather limited, it supplies, on the other hand, spatial information which is not obtainable by dielectric spectroscopy, so that both methods are in fact complementary.
We have two machines at our disposal, one used for frequencies up to 10 MHz and another for those up to 1.8 GHz.
