Memory Clinic Köln Jülich

PD Dr. Juraj Kukolja

The Memory Clinic Köln Jülich (JMC) aims to establish a close cooperation between clinical medicine and research in the field of aging and dementia. The initial consultation and assessment of cognitive complaints takes place at the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital of Cologne. In cooperation with the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM) at Jülich Research Centre, modern brain imaging tools such as PET-MRI are in use.

Eligible patients are offered participation in studies in which we aim to better understand cognitive processes, especially those underlying memory and its impairment in neurodegenerative diseases. We do so using different methods, such as behavioral experiments, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and positron emission tomography (PET).

What is dementia and why is there a need for early diagnosis of the underlying disease?

Dementia is a syndrome of irreversible cognitive impairments such as memory loss, disorientation and aphasia. Interference with activities of daily living is a core feature. The risk of developing dementia increases with age.

Though Alzheimer’s disease is by far the most common cause, other neurologic or psychiatric disorders can cause dementia or dementia-like symptoms. Carefully distinguishing those from Alzheimer’s disease is as important as identifying potentially reversible causes underlying cognitive impairment when it comes to choosing the right treatment approach.

Accordingly, The Memory Clinic Köln Jülich offers a wide range of investigational methods from early diagnosis to follow-up assessments concerning all kinds of memory complaints and cognitive impairment.
