Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harald Bolt
Member of the Board of Directors for Scientific Division II
Harald Bolt (born 1960) became a member of the Board of Directors on 1 February 2008.
He had previously been a scientific member of the Max Planck Society and director at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching since 1999, where he headed Materials Research, focusing on topics such as plasma–material interaction and advanced high-performance materials.
Harald Bolt studied mechanical engineering in Aachen from 1980 to 1985. He took his doctorate at RWTH Aachen University in 1988 and at Nagoya University, Japan, in 1990. From 1986 to 1988, he was a Euratom visiting scientist in Japan at the universities of Osaka and Nagoya and also at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. From 1988 to 1990, he was at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics working in the group planning the next European fusion facility and was also involved in work on ITER. From 1990 to 1992, he was active in teaching and research as an associate professor in the area of plasma–material interaction at the University of Tokyo. From 1992 to 1998, he headed a plasma technology research group at Forschungszentrum Jülich. In 1994, he received the DFG’s Gerhard Hess Award. In 1995, he was appointed professor (C3) by the University of Wuppertal and since 1999 has taught at TU Munich as an honorary professor.
In his scientific research, Harald Bolt has largely been concerned with materials science. For example, he developed materials and coatings that help to confine the hot plasma in fusion devices like ITER and he also investigated the interactions of these materials with the fusion plasma. In the European Union’s 6th Framework Programme, he coordinated one of the largest research projects in the materials sector, the EU ExtreMat Project (New Materials for Extreme Environments) with 37 partner institutions in 13 European countries.
He is involved in various international committees on which he holds a number of positions, including chairman of an EU committee for the implementation of energy materials research in Horizon 2020, member of the ESFRI committee on European infrastructures for energy research, member of the Advisory Group on Energy for the EU Directorates-General for Research as well as Transport and Energy (RP7), and member of the supervisory board of the European fusion agency "Fusion for Energy".
He is also a member of several scientific societies and of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences as well as of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).
