Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich are investigating how natural viruses that specifically infect bacteria can help plants fight off bacterial pathogens. These bacteriophages open up new prospects for more environmentally friendly plant protection and could make an important contribution to safeguarding harvests in the face of increasing heatwaves and growing pressures on agriculture.

15 years of climate research on Lufthansa scheduled flights

For 15 years, a Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 has been carrying not only passengers around the world, but also a piece of research from Jülich. On 8 July 2011, the aircraft with the registration D-AIGT took off for the first time with an IAGOS measuring system on board. Since then, it has been collecting climate-relevant atmospheric data on regular scheduled flights – coordinated by Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The priority of information combines Jülich research in three areas: simulation and data science in high-performance-computing (HPC), brain research, and research on bio- and nanoelectronic information technologies of the future. Quantum technologies are another priority at Jülich.

Energy and climate

Jülich energy research concentrates on an energy system based on renewable energy. Scientists research technologies on all scales – from the atomic level right up to industrial innovations – covering the entire value chain from basic to applied research.

Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is a biobased circular economy that does away with fossil resources and utilizes renewable resources instead. Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich are developing new value creation processes.
