In the Picture: Plant Phenotyping

White balls rise up between ears of wheat on a test plot; a type of camera can be seen on the right.Copyright: Forschungszentrum Jülich

This picture shows a measuring facility for plant phenotyping, Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Plant Sciences (IBG-2). The photo was taken in 2015 at the Klein Altendorf campus (University of Bonn); to be precise, in a mini pilot plant in a greenhouse on the campus.

The table-tennis balls serve as markers for the data processing of pictures taken by a thermal imaging camera over a prolonged period of time (the camera itself is not shown in the picture).

The instrument on the right-hand side is a sensor which measures the surface temperature of the field. The aim of the experiment is to monitor and analyse plant growth.
