JUGENE: the supercomputer

JUGENE is the top system of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. Equipped with 294,912 processor cores, JUGENE has the performance of one petaflop/s, which is one trillion arithmetic operations per second: 1 000 000 000 000 000. Such power is required for complex computational tasks, for example to compute how the simplest protein molecules could have originated more than four billion years ago – long before there was any life on Earth.
