Simulation Laboratory Neuroscience

Computer simulations are becoming increasingly important for understanding the processes in the brain. However, the more realistic simulations become, the more computationally intensive they are. From 2013, neuroscientists, medical scientists, computer scientists, mathematicians and physicists have worked together in the Simulation Laboratory (SimLab) Neuroscience.

In an interdisciplinary approach, they continually tailor the simulation software for brain processes to the latest supercomputers in the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC).

The growing complexity of brain models and the huge volumes of data involved pose a major challenge to the 3-D visualization of the model brain. For this reason, high-performance computing experts in the SimLab Neuroscience further develop the necessary software and hardware on an ongoing basis.

The SimLab Neuroscience is funded by both the Helmholtz Association, as part of the Helmholtz portfolio theme "Supercomputing and Modelling for the Human Brain", and the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA). In its function as the "Bernstein Facility Simulation and Database Technology", the Simulation Lab will provide the national Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience with its expertise in simulation and database technologies, thus ensuring its optimal integration into the field of computational neuroscience in Germany.
