The human brain is at the centre of health research at Jülich. Jülich researchers investigate the structure and functions of the healthy and diseased brain in order to develop new methods of early diagnosis and better treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s. For this purpose, physicists, medical scientists, pharmacologists, chemists and biologists cooperate closely. Together with industry, they design new imaging techniques and develop new pharmaceuticals. In this way, they help to image changes in the brain even more precisely, and could alleviate the course of dementia or even bring it to a standstill in the future.

Functioning of the Brain

In order to associate brain structures with their functions, researchers at Jülich are currently working on a standardized map of the brain that is multidimensional and accurate down to the millimetre. It represents the foundation for further medical research. In addition, information transmission in the brain is also at the centre of scientific interest, for example the role of synapses and chemical neurotransmitters. For their research, scientists use imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which produces images of the finest cell structures and active regions of the brain and shows the differences between healthy and diseased tissue. Positron emission tomography (PET) makes the metabolism of the brain visible.
