Typical work fields and tasks
Scientific development of AI methods

This area focuses on the further development of artificial intelligence itself. You will conduct research into innovative AI algorithms such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and explainable AI, and apply new approaches from basic research.
You will work with large, complex scientific data sets and train models that are not only accurate but also robust and comprehensible. A particular focus is on linking AI with high-performance computing. On Europe's most modern supercomputing infrastructure you will take AI methods to a new level of performance.
Applied AI in natural sciences, life sciences, and engineering
Here, you will apply your AI expertise directly to major societal challenges. In interdisciplinary teams, you will develop data-driven solutions for research questions in neuroscience, climate modeling, energy optimization, and materials development.
You will apply existing AI models, adapt them to specific research needs, and develop new applications in collaboration with subject matter experts. Close collaboration with various disciplines makes your work diverse and effective.
AI consulting and strategic development
In this field, you will act as a catalyst for the use of AI in research. You will advise research departments on how AI can be used effectively, develop use cases, and help to strategically anchor data-driven methods.
In addition, you will actively shape institutional AI development by developing concepts, guidelines, and strategies. You will work at the interface between science, technology, administration, and external partners, such as those from politics or industry.
