We are offering a

PhD Position - Algorithms and Compilation for Quantum Computers

titel

The mission of the Institute for Quantum Computing Analytics (PGI-13) is to model and improve quantum computing systems on multiple levels. From optimal control of the hardware, over error mitigation and compilation, to application specific quantum algorithms. We focus working on interfaces between disciplines in large innovative projects that strive for the development of scalable and useful quantum computers. In a tight integration with quantum computer hardware developers, we investigate the applicability of quantum computers towards real-world applications in a hardware-software co-design paradigm.

Your Job:

You will explore strategies for optimal compilation of variational quantum algorithms (VQA) on near-term quantum computers. Both the characteristics of the target application and algorithm, as well as the target hardware are considered in the context of a hardware-software code design. This includes:

  • Conceptual development of error-aware interfaces between firmware and compiler.
  • Development of novel approaches to multi-qubit gates as they occur in VQA such as QAOA
  • Investigation of modified ansätze to VQA
  • Exploration of gate synthesis for VQA
  • Incorporation of error mitigation into the compilation algorithms
  • Implementation and benchmarking of compilation algorithms

Your Profile:

  • Master in physics, computer science or comparable fields
  • Good knowledge of quantum theory, ideally quantum information theory
  • Proven organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in interdisciplinary teams
  • Good written and spoken English language skills
  • Ideally good German language skills, both written and spoken
  • Ideally experience in software development

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We offer ideal conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:

  • A large research campus with green spaces, offering the best possible means for networking with colleagues and pursuing sports alongside work
  • A highly motivated working group as well as an international and interdisciplinary working environment at one of Europe’s largest research establishments
  • Outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure
  • Opportunity to participate in (international) conferences and project meetings
  • Continuous scientific mentoring by your scientific advisor
  • Flexible work (location) arrangements, e.g. remote work
  • Further development of your personal strengths, e.g. through an extensive range of training courses; a structured program of continuing education and networking opportunities specifically for doctoral researchers via JuDocS, the Jülich Center for Doctoral Researchers and Supervisors: https://www.fz-juelich.de/en/judocs
  • Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service

The position is for a fixed term of 3 years, with possible long-term prospects. Pay in line with 75% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) and additionally 60 % of a monthly salary as special payment („Christmas bonus“). Pay higher than the basic pay may be possible.
