We are offering a

PhD Position - Numerical Simulations of Active Particles in Foam-Like Confinements

titel

The heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture is nowadays still crucial for the food supply. However, this practice leads to significant environmental and health issues, including poisoning, environmental degradation, and the development of insecticide resistance. EU policies and the UN Sustainable Development Goals advocate for safer, more sustainable alternatives like biopesticides. BIOMAC-BP (Bio-Stabalized Multi-Phase Materials as Carriers for Biopesticides) is a Marie-Sklodowska-Curie doctoral network addressing the issue of synthetic pesticide use by developing sustainable biopesticide formulations. The international consortium brings together experts from soft-matter physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, microbiology, biophysics and agricultural science, and combines industrial and academic perspectives. The project`s main objective is to develop and optimize novel bio-sourced materials to incorporate bacteria capable of producing biopesticides, enhancing the benefits and sustainability of the formulations. This effort aims to reduce synthetic pesticide emissions, improve agricultural practices, and support a greener future for the chemical industry. One of the doctoral projects within the BIOMAC-BP programme will be carried out at the Institute for Advanced Simulation - Theoretical Physics of Living Matter (IAS-2)

Models details are to be developed in close cooperation with the experimental partners to closely reproduce the properties of specific microorganisms. Your tasks will include :

  • Familiarize with active matter general behaviour and acquire specific knowledge of interaction with confining boundaries
  • Model development mimicking actual applications such as bacteria encapsulation or spraying conditions
  • Code development and testing in C, C++, LAMMPS, Open MPI, and/or CUDA
  • Analyze and interpret the results and design of further computing experiments
  • Publish research in high-impact journals and present at leading international conferences

Your Profile:

  • Eligible candidates should hold an MSc degree in physics, chemistry, material science or engineering, or a related discipline and have a background in soft matter, statistical physics and physical chemistry.
  • You have both interest and experience in scientific programming
  • Additionally, you need to be fluent in English, both oral and written
  • You show enthusiasm for conducting original research in an interdisciplinary and international team, and you strive for scientific excellence
  • Due to specific conditions defined by the European Commission, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date

Our Offer:
