At the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems - Jülich Systems Analysis (ICE-2), we work as a team to investigate the long-term development of socio-technical energy systems – always with a focus on transformation, innovation and societal relevance. Our Circular Economy department is looking for a committed team leader to help establish and further develop research structures in a highly topical and socially significant field: sustainable life cycles for a resilient circular economy.

Your Job:

  • Help us shape the future of energy research by strategically developing our research field on sustainable life cycles for circular economy
  • Take responsibility for your own research projects: from successfully acquiring third-party funding to planning and managing interdisciplinary research projects with an impact on science, politics, and society
  • Identify relevant research topics, coordinate project progress, ensure quality, and actively contribute your ideas to the further development of our department
  • Bring your topics to the attention of experts in the field through scientific publications and conference presentations, as well as active networking at the national and international level
  • Lead a motivated scientific team and develop innovative scientific perspectives together with colleagues, doctoral candidates, and students


Your Profile:

  • You have successfully completed your doctorate in engineering, e.g. in the field of sustainable circularity
  • You hold a very good degree (master`s or equivalent) in engineering (e.g., mechanical engineering, process engineering, industrial engineering), natural and environmental science or a related field
  • You have extensive experience in life cycle thinking and circular economy
  • You have successfully acquired and managed third-party funded projects and have a track record of publications in recognized, peer-reviewed journals
  • Familiarity with programming (e.g. Python) preferable
  • You have already taken on responsibility, e.g. in supervising doctoral students, leading small teams or in coordinating research roles, and would now like to develop this leadership experience
  • You work independently, strategically, and in a solution-oriented manner, while always maintaining an overview of the big picture as well as methodological details
  • You have strong social and communication skills for leading and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
  • Fluent written and spoken English; German skills are an advantage

We offer you an exciting and varied role in an international and interdisciplinary working environment. The position is for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to them.
