Forschungszentrum Jülich is one of the largest research institutions in Europe, seeking answers to the big questions of the future, focusing on the socially relevant areas of information, energy, and bioeconomy. We are a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF). Forschungszentrum Jülich operates the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) in collaboration with our partners, the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt and the Goethe University Frankfurt. The institute`s mission is to research, apply, and promote cutting-edge computing strategies. In addition, the NIC`s innovative core and research topics include methods of machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven modelling, energy-efficient technologies and ground-breaking technologies such as quantum computing or neuromorphic computing. In order to strengthen and expand our ML/AI core research activities we are currently seeking an expert to fill the position of the head of the NIC Research Group.

Your Job:

You will primarily engage in research on or with large scale AI models (such as open foundation models) and datasets necessary for their creation using the supercomputers available at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Together with local research institutes, you will develop and utilize methods of scalable training and inference towards stronger generalization and transfer with the aim to address a variety of scientific disciplines. Building or deepening international collaborations is encouraged.

Your Profile:

  • Demonstrated scientific excellence in large scale ML/AI, related to scientific disciplines
  • Proven experience managing simulation and/or ML/AI projects on supercomputers
  • Expertise in developing and advancing ML/AI-relevant software packages and tools, with commitment to open-source activities
  • Proven leadership experience in managing scientific research groups and people management skills
  • Successful interdisciplinary collaboration with national and/or international partners
  • Strong creative and strategic thinking abilities

The position is for a fixed term of 3 to 5 years. Salary and social benefits correspond to the importance of the position and will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to them.
