Profile eleQtron

About eleQtron:

eleQtron is a start-up from Siegen that was founded in 2020 by Prof Dr Christof Wunderlich, Dr Michael Johanning and Jan Leisse. The deep-tech start-up started as a research group of the Chair of Quantum Optics at the University of Siegen and now consists of a 50-strong team of international experts. eleQtron is the first quantum computer manufacturer in Germany with the aim of making freely programmable quantum computers usable for real applications. To achieve this, eleQtron relies on its proprietary MAGIC (MAgnetic Gradient Induced Coupling) technology, which makes the control of the ion qubits scalable and very precise. Investors and sponsors include the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), venture capitalist Earlybird and Siegerlandfonds. In 2022, eleQtron was able to secure funding totalling over 15 million euros, mainly through the BMBF-funded 'MAGIC App' project. One year later, eleQtron and its consortium partners NXP and ParityQC secured two contracts to supply DLR with pioneering quantum computers with a total volume of around 82 million euros.

The biggest challenge currently facing the production of quantum computers is the shielding and control of the qubits. Qubits are the smallest computing unit of a quantum computer - what the bits are in a conventional computer or supercomputer.

Using its proprietary MAGIC (MAgnetic Gradient Induced Coupling) technology, eleQtron combines ion trap technology with high-frequency waves instead of controlling the qubits individually with lasers. The qubits can thus be controlled much better and more easily. The requirements for the laser system are drastically reduced, which makes the technology much more precise and scalable.

Jan Henrik Leisse:

"Based on our MAGIC concept, we are developing quantum computers specifically tailored to solving commercial problems. The potential is huge, as they enable enormous progress in a wide range of areas: from materials research, logistics or supply chain management in industry to individualised products in the pharmaceutical sector and risk management in finance. And this is just the beginning. In the future, quantum computers will solve problems that seem unimaginable today," says Jan Henrik Leisse, co-founder and CEO of eleQtron.

Prof. Dr. Christof Wunderlich:

"Stored ions are a frontrunner for the construction of quantum computers. Thanks to MAGIC technology, reliable high-frequency technology can now be used for the upscaling of ion-based quantum computers, as it is already used today in mobile phones, for example. ", says Prof Dr Christof Wunderlich (CSO). Wunderlich pioneered the research field of RF-controlled stored ions and is one of the world's leading experts in this field.

Dr. Michael Johanning:

"Quantum technology and computing will lead to a multitude of applications whose impact on data processing and thus on our society itself will be groundbreaking. The handling of information is so important to our daily lives that sovereignty and control over this technology is essential," says Michael Johanning, Co-Founder and CTO of eleQtron.
