Information about apprenticeship as Glass Apparatus Maker (f/m/d)
Glass apparatus makers produce individual parts, devices and assemblies from various glass materials with high demands on precision and quality. Your tools are the Bunsen burner, the hand blower and the glass lathe for hot processing of glass, as well as various machines for cold processing of glass.
A JOB FOR PEOPLE WITH MANUAL SKILLS
The range of tasks extends from the manufacture of simple glass components to the production of complex laboratory structures from various glass materials. Glass apparatus makers also repair and modify existing glass equipment and assemblies. These devices are manufactured by hand. They are based on drawings, sketches or samples. Tubes and rods as well as various components such as taps, valves and threads are used as starting materials. The glass is heated in the flame of a burner until it can be shaped and joined together. The job description of a glass apparatus maker includes also the grinding and drilling of glass with diamond tools and the melting of metals into various types of glass.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO?
The requirement is a secondary school diploma (Hauptschulabschluss Sekundarstufe I) or (technical) high school diploma (Realschulabschluss). Stamina is important to learn the very demanding manual skills. What is crucial are manual skills, an affinity for technology, spatial awareness, creativity and enjoyment of individual solutions, as well as careful work, a sense of responsibility and good cooperation. German language skills are mandatory as training and education are in German.
TRAINING WITH A FUTURE
In addition to practical training in the glass and ceramics processing workshop at the Central Institute for Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-1) at ‘’Forschungszentrum Jülich’’, you will attend vocational school in block form at the ‘’Staatliche Glasfachschule Rheinbach’’. The training is not company-specific and teaches a wide range of skills and techniques that are also in high demand outside the research centre. The final examination is taken at the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce. If you want to learn more, you can continue your training to become a master craftsman or technician specializing in glass technology/glassworks technology.
