INM-5 Nuclear chemistry
The institute mainly performs tasks which require the use of nuclear methods. In particular the development of new substances labelled with short-lived isotopes is the focus of the research topics. These are used as radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic imaging of humans using techniques like the positron emission tomography (PET) or the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).
The advantage of these nuclear medicine medical imaging techniques lies in the non-invasive detection of regional physiological disturbed processes before the disease is apparent morphologically. This should enable to start early with therapeutical arrangements.
