Deciding which career path to choose is one of the most common problems doctoral researchers and postdocs face after their research is complete.

Next to pursuing a career in academia there are numerous career paths available. Some may be directly related to your research while some may require you to apply the skills and subject-area expertise you gained during your research.

Below we listed an overview of the 4 main career tracks:

Academia

The freedom of research and the chance to contribute to society motivate young scientists to pursue a career in academic teaching and/or research. It is logically the first choice for many scientists.

Science Management

Within the last years, science management has become a growing career possibility for people who like to communicate and act as a bridge between administrative and academic staff in research institutions and universities.

Industry

Industry offers a variety of challenging jobs. An indefinite contract and an attractive salary are only two advantages of working in industry. You can for example find a job in Research and Development, e.g. in a biotechnical or pharmaceutical company, or start a career as a manager.

Entrepreneurship

Would you like to commercialize a great idea or product you developed? Then a career as an entrepreneur might be the right option for you. Creating a business plan and finding investors is probably new to you, but researchers often have the ability to write and burn for their product.
