BIO2REG: BioökonomieREVIER goes Europe

As a model region for bioeconomy recognised throughout Europe, the Rhenish mining area can serve as a role model for other transformation regions. Together with European partners, the coordination office BioökonomieREVIER at Forschungszentrum Jülich is developing a network of regions funded by the European Commission. The aim is to anchor bioeconomy as a central narrative of regional transformation, to provide regional stakeholders with actionable knowledge and to improve direct exchange between European regions.

BIO2REG: BioökonomieREVIER goes Europe

The project BIO2REG „Enabling transition towards circular and systemic BIOeconomy model regions by a REGions-to-REGions approach“ will start in January 2024. The project aims to enable the transition of greenhouse gas-intensive regions to bioeconomy model regions through concrete and actionable measures.

Central to the project is its regions-to-regions approach, which builds off a diverse consortium of 9 partners from 8 European countries: DE, ES, GR, BE, SE, IS, CZ, FR.

Driven by the shift towards sustainable development, regions with carbon-intensive economies, such as coal mining, intensive agriculture, forestry, fisheries and peat are undergoing significant structural change. Faced with serious economic disruptions and social strain, many are utilising the transformative power of the bioeconomy. Regional stakeholders, however, often lack the necessary actionable know-how, framework and financial support to move beyond concepts and strategies and towards regional bioeconomy implementation.

Here BIO2REG steps in to equip stakeholders with an array of practical knowledge and tools to design and implement region-specific transitions. The project’s unique model region framework places regions and their specificities at the centre of this transformation.

You can look forward to an interregional network with an exchange programme and a range of mentoring and training opportunities.
