JULIAC

The project JULIAC aims to explore the day- and nighttime chemistry of oxidation processes which are responsible for atmospheric self-cleaning and the formation of secondary pollutants (photo oxidants and secondary organic aerosols) during different seasons of the year.

The investigation took place 2018 on the campus of Forschungszentrum Jülich. At this site, the air composition is strongly influenced by biogenic VOCs from mixed deciduous forest, and anthropogenic trace gases (VOCs, NOx) from traffic, small cities and agriculture in the surrounding region.

Ambient air will be continuously sampled and transferred through the atmosphere simulation chamber SAPHIR, where the chemical composition and photochemical processes will be studied by a comprehensive set of measurement instruments. The recorded data will be used to test and improve atmospheric-chemical models, which are needed for regional and global predictions of atmospheric pollutants.
