Material and Component Development

About

Developing fusion as a viable energy source hinges largely on the availability of material solutions for the first wall and the divertor, with the main limiting factor in many cases being the plasma-facing materials or armor. In both cases, strong interactions with particles, heat, and neutrons make the development of advanced material solutions essential. At IFN-1, we focus our materials and component development on tungsten alloys and composites, which can extend the operational window, particularly with respect to power plant lifetime, safety, and performance, as well as functional materials such as permeation barriers.
