JUNCA Tutorial: Anatomy of the neocortex
This tutorial will provide an overview of the structure of the neocortex, the brain region that is in the main focus of Neuromorphic Computing.
Starting with its coarse macroscopic features, the lecture will gradually zoom in and describe concepts such as cortical areas, the cortical microcolumn, and cortical layers, and provide an overview of the cortical short- and long-range connectivity characteristics.

Lecturer: Dr. Tom Tetzlaff, INM-6
Content: Macroscopic structure: overall brain structure, hemispheres, cortex areas, Microscopic structure: cell types, layers, microcolumns, Universality (Mountcastle), Cortical connectivity: synapses, afferents and efferents, vertical connectivity, horizontal connectivity (local, long-range)
Target group: Bachelor, master und PhD students in the disciplines contributing to neuromorphic computing (e.g., neuroscience, materials and computer sciences, electrical engineering, physics)
Language: English
