Organization

IEK-14 focuses on researching and developing electrolyzers and fuel cells as well as hydrogen-based fuel synthesis. Four specialist departments for low-temperature water electrolysis, reversible solid oxide cells, chemical catalyst fuel synthesis, and systems technology are supported by tool- and method-based departments.
Focusing intensively on a few types of energy conversion and a restricted power range of selected applications makes it possible to work on fuel cells with teams of supercritical size beginning with the electrochemical cells and ranging up to process engineering for the whole system.

Research and Development Emphases

The subinstitute’s objectives and focal points are unlocking the synergies between the specialized disciplines and putting theory into practice in order to reach a pilot stage. Furthermore, application-oriented R&D activities are accompanied by basic research aiming to clarify structure-activity relationships using selected advanced analysis methods developed further to suit the applications. Modeling and simulation provides an important link between the fundamental cause-effect relationships and technical implementation. Applied to the various scale levels and combined with each other, computer-generated simulation results permit realistic predictions of parametrized operating results.

In view of the current challenges of a sustainable energy supply, and based on its own process evaluations for sustainable synthesis routes of alternative liquid fuels, IEK-14 has opened up two additional research and development fields for power-to-fuel and bio-to-fuel pathways. These fields are complemented by reactor design and experiments as well as focused accompanying research on fuel synthesis from H2 and CO2.
