EoCoE – Energy-oriented centre of Excellence:

This Horizon2020 project in the framework of the call for European Centres of Excellence for computing applications (EINFRA) addresses the following aims of the European Commission:

  • Improving access to computing applications and expertise that enables researchers and industry to be more productive, leading to scientific excellence;
  • Improving competitiveness for companies and SMEs through access to CoE expertise and services;
  • Fostering European leadership in applications that address societal challenges or are important for industrial applications through better code performance and better code maintenance and availability;
  • Increasing the number scientists and engineers trained in the use of computational methods and optimisation of applications.

To answer the call a dedicated structure is built that gathers all the required skills and expertise in a Transversal Basis from maths and numerical methods to high performance computing (HPC) tools and techniques to work with and support applications communities to redesign and improve their codes to make them run efficiently on cutting-edge and future supercomputers.

In a first three-year phase, four applications communities are supported:

  • Meteorology for Energy to cope with the variability of weather on renewable energies such as solar and wind sources to gain in supply predictability;
  • Materials for Energy to numerically screen the best composition for efficient energy storage (batteries and super capacitors) and enhanced energy production (photovoltaics);
  • Water for Energy to analyse the possible production and storage hydropower scenarios under climate change constraints and geothermal heat and electricity production possibilities under heavy populated areas;
  • Fusion for Energy to get more accurate simulations in the scope of the ITER international facility project.

Six countries have joined a French-German central hub to form a powerful pan-European task force. Twenty-two partners with international high-level experts in the related domains will work in synergy to fulfill these objectives.
